About

My name is Steve Zacher and I’ve been training BJJ since November, 2006.  I decided a few years ago that I had to make a change.  I’ve always been athletic, but never an athlete.  I enjoyed sports, but have never been a part of a team or really involved in any formal competition.
After 15 years of smoking too much, drinking too much and not doing nearly enough exercise, I was (like most Americans) overweight, had high cholesterol and was pre-diabetic.    I was a wreck.  When my son asked about martial arts classes, I thought it was a great idea.
I ended up training at that school for about three years, when, for many reasons, I decided to make a change.  About four months later, I walked into Foster  BJJ, at that time located in Auburn, WA.  I was nervous and felt completely out of place.   When I signed the waiver, the only physical limitation I noted was “fat.”
I started this blog a few weeks later and the rest is history.  I love it, and it’s been tremendously good for me mentally and physically.
I lost 40 lbs steadily over the first six months, and have kept it off ever since.  I’m happier, healthier and have learned a lot about myself as I work to balance my training with my family, my age and my health.
