For Bingo. I tried to batik a design inspired by the biohazard symbol. Once again, I’m getting the fickleness of fabric, but I think it turned out okay. The orange is awesome. I’d give myself a 9/10 for color, but maybe a 5 or a 6 for the design. My son says it’s at least a 7, and I think he’s awesome for that!

I think I’m going to make a patch next. I completely suck at batik, but it’s so fun. I’d like to do more, but it will be easier to make them on canvas.
That is one kickass gi! I take back what I said about not being skilled enough to rock a brightly colored gi. I wouldn’t mind getting my ass kicked in one of those!

Looks nice and well done and creative but I would have to pass. Im a traditionalist in that sense. Blue or white all and never mix. I can hear it now “party pooper” haha.
Mike, that’s what’s great about BJJ and the people who train in it. There’s room for everyone. Nobody gets hung up on stuff like this.
I’m actually going to dye a navy blue gi for a friend soon. Nothing too wacky for him, either.

What brand is the dye? Me thinks you brought a white koral mkm gi? I want to do the same as orange is my favourite color. And the chosen color of my Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ, Boxing Team.
I use Procion MX Fiber Reactive dye purchased through Dharma Trading. The color was Deep Orange. Good luck.
how much dye do i need, for a the gi jacket and pants?
It depends on how deep you want the color, which color and how heavy the fabric is.
Dharmatrading.com sells the dye in 2 oz, 8 oz and then on up from there. It takes approximately 1/2 oz per pound of fabric, and the average gi weighs between 3 and 4 lbs. So, for many of the colors, 2 oz is plenty to dye a gi.
There are some colors, like some reds and blues, that require double the amount of dye. So, you’d need about 4oz for a gi. And finally, there are a few colors, like black, that require 4x the amount of dye… so 8oz.

just a quick one how could you dye the gi without dye the patches? do you have to remove them? or is there a technique to go around them?
Nothing difficult. I just use good dye that’s made for natural fibers. If you go with a Rit dye or something like that, you’re going to have trouble. Using a good, fiber reactive dye will only dye the cotton. Any cotton patches will dye, but most of them are made from polyester, as is most thread. So, you’ll end up with a finished looking gi.
Excellent! My teenager just expressed the desire for an orange gi, so I consulted Doc Google and here this was! It has to be BRIGHT orange, not dark: “I want to stun my opponents, before I defeat them.”

Hi, how did you put the symbol on it?
Michael, I used a technique called Batik. Basically, you start with a white gi, melt wax and sort of paint the design you want on the fabric. The wax resists the dye and you end up with a pattern.
One more thing…
I want to have enough for three gis, but don’t know how much of everything I need

16oz detergent
16oz milsoft
8oz calsolene oil
1 lb soda ash (prolly need more)
1 lb urea (also probably need more)
