Rough Wednesday Class

Yesterday after class, I felt pretty well used up. Class started off with about 15 minutes of warm-ups, followed by positional drills for about 15 minutes. We worked side control, back control and mount. Anyone caught giving up their back from mount had to do 30 burpees.

After warm-ups, we moved into some limited sparring. Guard passes, half guard passes and then mount. In the first two, there were no submissions; the idea was to pass from on top or sweep from on bottom. The mount drills opened up to submissions from top. It was here that the evening unraveled for me a little bit. I started off with purple belt Doug who passed my guard with ease. Then, pretty much everyone else did, too. Ugh. The rest of drills went no better. After class I wondered if I had taken a little of my frustration out on Frye, a white belt whom I like quite a bit. He was on the bottom in the mount drill and I caught him with the ezekial choke, which is something I’m working on from that position. I don’t think I was malicious and I know that I gave him a little room to work, but at the same time, that I’m thinking about it now is a pretty good sign that I was probably a bit of a jerk.

Sparring went no better. I got lots of matches in, but just didn’t seem to be able to do anything but defend. I had no real offense to speak of. Just a blah day, but we all have them. On the plus side, my back seems to be holding up well and I’m feeling pretty good, looking forward to Friday’s afternoon class.

Its nice to hear some one feeling the same way. I hit a point too where I felt like I was going backwards and couldn’t do anything right. I blogged about it on my site. http://www.whatifoundout.com/brazilian-jiu-jitsu/jiu-jitsu-mind-block-in-the-slump/
I talked with my instructor and he explained it is part of the learning process or curve. Here is the blog I posted about what I learned from him: http://www.whatifoundout.com/brazilian-jiu-jitsu/the-jiu-jitsu-learning-curve-what-to-expect/
I hope that helps you some Steve.

I ran across your blob shopping for Gi’s. Your teacher is going to be doing a seminar at our school in Texas. Mohler Jiu-jitsu. Oh and boy I have had more than a share of bad days. Most end up with injuries. There are so many aspects of our game other than the physical. We often forget to get our mind and our nutrition trained too. Take care.

  5. Dont worry about it. Everyone gets these off days. Whenever I get them I like to slow everything down and think about each movement and position, making sure i am getting them correct.

Congrats on the merge from Blogger to WordPress by the way. Looks really good. Im interested in doing the same but have not got the first clue about it! Any tips you could email me would really help. Only if you have the time though. All the best.
