Bingo had us working on a couple of sweeps from the 93 guard yesterday. If you haven’t heard of it, the 93 guard is basically a modified half guard where you have your inside leg hooking behind your opponent’s leg, and the outside leg is on his hip. The default position has you controlling your opponent’s leg with your inside hand and controlling your opponent’s sleeve or lapel with your other.
While my impression is that the 93 guard has been around a while (maybe since 1993?) but the only real instructional I’ve seen on it is Robson Moura’s DVD Fusion 2. Here’s a link to a sample on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ypqf_sOa6Y
You can see the default position at about 20 seconds into the video. He keeps his knee high to block the pass and what you can’t see is that his other foot turns down just a little to sort of hold that leg in place. It’s difficult to describe, but hopefully you can get the idea from the picture or the YouTube videos. The particular sweep in the video isn’t one I’ve been working on, but the position is strong, particularly since it’s not that out there right now.
The sweeps we worked on in class were a scissor sweep among a few others. I’ve been working as much as I can from half guard for the past few months and I’ve seen definite improvements. I’ve got a last ditch reversal that I’m pretty good at setting up for when someone’s really coming around to pass. I’ve been working from underhooks, and have a couple of butterfly hook sweeps that I’m getting better at.
My back is feeling better every day. I’d say I’m rolling at about 80% right now. I’m sleeping well and as I told my coach yesterday, I feel like I’m finally getting my sense of humor back.

cool vid, I too have been playing a lot recently with half guard and '93 guard (didn't know it was called this!). I need a hell lot of work on it so might check out Moura's instructional. Thanks!
t's a good video. And as an added bonus, Moura couldn't be more Brazilian: "Okay, guys [pronounced Gah-yees]. Thanks for buying my DVD, guys. I've worked very hard for you."
It's very clear, though and there are many things that I've not seen anywhere else, such as the 93 guard stuff.
good vid. I think the 93 guard position is a good transition position in order to work such sweeps.
Hey dude, I have a couple other videos from 93 guard on my blog:
