The road trip is over… about 2 weeks with no BJJ. We packed up the Mazda 5 and hit the road, and had a blast. Overall, the kids, including Lily, were really good.
Down in Disneyland, it occurred to me that, if this were really the happiest place on Earth, there would be a BJJ school. But anyway… my wife pretty much laid down the law: no jiu jitsu.
I’ve been training at least three times per week since I got back, but if I’m being honest, I’m very unhappy with where I’m at. I’ve never been the fastest study in Jiu Jitsu, and I am not too worried about whether I learn as fast as someone else, or begrudge others their success. I am, however, getting a little discouraged that I seem to be about the slowest! I don’t need to be the best athlete, but damn it all, I don’t want to be the worst. I see so many guys come in and they just seem to pick it up so fast. Where are all the 35 year old, fat guys???
Ultimately, I think my frustration stems from this plateau I’m on. I just feel like my brain is saturated with BJJ. I am only now beginning to incorporate a half guard sweep that I first learned over a year ago. I look at some guys who have trained half as long as I have, and they know all of these fancy techniques. Me… if a technique has more than 3 or 4 steps, forget it. I know that I’ll get past it, and I really hope this doesn’t come off as whiny or anything like that. Just consider this a rant of sorts… towards myself.
But enough about that. Here are some Disney pics from our road trip a few weeks ago.
There’s the requisite Micky Mouse picture. I think this is a great picture of the family. I look like a dork, but I guess that has nothing to do with the picture. Everyone else looks great.
Ken really likes Pluto, so he and Maddie were delighted to run across him. We managed to snag him just before he disappeared into the depths of the Disneyland tunnels.
Apparently Lily likes Pluto, too.
Come to think of it, Lily liked pretty much all of the characters. The only thing that freaked her out at all was the mist machine. She didn’t like that one bit. But she did like all of the storybook rides, Pirates of the Carribean, Haunted Mansion, and anything else that got in her way. I was concerned that she would be a little intimidated by the giant characters. Turns out, she thinks they’re giant stuffed animals and immediately tried to chew on their noses.
Goofy came by and spent a good 5 minutes just playing with Lily. He left, then came back by to play some more, left again and then finally came back with a pen and wrote “Cutest baby all day.” I don’t care if he says that to all the babies!
And last but not least, a picture of all three of my Princesses with Belle.

I had no idea. I need to figure that trip out!
Thanks, Meerkat and Mike!
Meerkat, I'll keep plugging away.
Both the Disney resorts here in the US have a massive martial arts tournment (which includes BJJ) once a year…
in March at Disneyland
in October at Disney World
I went through a slump earlier in the year. It was more mental fatigue than a technical slump but I just didn't feel I was getting anywhere.
But I just ticked along as normal and somehow, I got through it and now I'm on a bit of roll at the moment. Hope it lasts, but I guess these things just go up and down. Think long-term and you'll be laughing soon.
BTW. Disneyland Europe (Paris) will be hosting a major BJJ comp in Feb 2010. So Disney CAN be the happiest place in the world!
I am gonna be like Ed O'neil (aka Al Bundy) – train for 15+ yrs before getting my black belt
Thanks, Mike! We'll sandbag as blue belts until we're old and decrepit!
this is a repost cause it didn't post earlier…
I know how you feel. I feel as if I regressed quite a bit, only to have start to progress the way I want. It gets frustrating when others who have just started pick things up better and faster and seeing others get promoted faster as well. So I have come to the realization that I am not going to be very good at BJJ, but I will stick with it cause it's fun and I like to roll.
One thing you should be happy about: I have been a blue belt since Dec. 2006 and you have more stripes than me
