Yesterday’s class was quite light. The highlight being a visit from Rick. I won’t go into the specifics and will just say that he’s been dealing with some pretty heavy medical stuff lately. Suffice to say we’ve been thinking a lot about him, and sending every positive vibe we could his way for the last couple of weeks.
After warmups, Rick came in and told everyone at the school the story of what’s he’s been going through. We ended up sitting around for about 1/2 hour as he told us what’s been going on. Anyone that knows Rick knows he’s an institution, a fundamental part of the school. Listening to his story was inspirational and seeing him smile and laugh was terrific. Hopefully, Rick will be back on the mats in about 6 months.
The photo is from last July. I was sparring with Rick, working to get out of his half guard. As I recall, he had locked down my leg so tightly that my foot was going to sleep. He was a svelte 270 or so at the time. I think he’s down to a petit 250 or so now.
Don’t forget, if you’re looking for BJJ gear, check out Razorback Jiu Jitsu. Douglas sells the full range of Atama gear, including the Mundial #7, and if you use the coupon code “STEVE” you’ll save 15% off of your offer.
I am sorry I missed out. I went and visited him a couple of nights prior to his surgery and he was in great spirits and I am glad that he is was in to see everyone.
What meant a great deal to me was he appreciated me taking the time to come see him, and he said if anything was to inspire him or help him remain optimistic, it is the story I told him about my son, and the neurosurgery that my son went through.
Thanks for posting that info, I feel better now knowing Rick is doing well.
